Dreams

There is no question that God loves to send dreams to His people. Usually, the meaning of the dream is not immediately apparent, and sometimes it’s impossible to search out on your own. In that instance, seeking some wise counsel can be a good idea. You might even know someone who has a gift of interpreting dreams.

Most of us have dreams, whether we want to or not, and, like everything else, God wants to use things already present in our lives to speak to us!

When we take a step back and really open our hearts to hearing the voice of God, He will use anything to tell us who He is and how He feels about us. Dreams are no exception!

There is no way to adequately sum up all the forms a dream from God might take, but I have found it helpful to classify them as if they fall on a spectrum. On one end is the simple, straightforward word of direction. These dreams are not terribly hard to interpret. A great example of one of these is when God told Joseph to take his family directly to Egypt.

On the other end of the spectrum is a dream full of the emotional and metaphorical language God uses to speak to our hearts. These dreams will be full of evocative imagery and powerful emotions.

An example of this would be the dream about the rolling barley loaf the Midianite soldier spoke about in the hearing of Gideon (Judg. 7:13). This imagery had come with some powerful emotions for the soldier. Unfortunately God was not giving him good news, and on some level he could tell judgment was coming.

So next time you experience a dream that seems significant or even strange, write it down and offer it up to the Lord. Ask Him to show you if He has something for you within the imagery and emotions that make dreams so unique.
