The Still Small Voice

God loves to whisper.

In the age of multi-billion dollar marketing campaigns it is hard for us to imagine our All Powerful Creator speaking in subtle and easily missed ways.

It just does not compute for the human mind that humility and meekness are core aspects of God’s Voice.

The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.” Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.

— The Prophet Elijah

God can and does thunder forth in awesome power many times in Scripture…

But, even more often, He chooses small and gentle ways to reveal Himself. When Jesus came, everyone expected a mighty conqueror, but instead we got the Man of Sorrows. How often do we ask God to speak to us and miss His answer because His voice is much more quiet and humble than we thought it would be?

But what is the Still Small Voice?

It is The Holy Spirit’s gentle invitation to take on the Mind of Christ.

1 Corinthians 2:16 says:

“... But we have the mind of Christ [to be guided by His thoughts and purposes].” (AMP)

It can come in the form of ideas that seem encouraging and out of place in the daily grind,

I was made for more than just ordinary.

Or the desire to do something completely out of place in our normal lives of comfort while standing in line at the grocery store,

What if I paid for this single mom’s food today.

The fact that good thoughts exist is not evidence of the inherent goodness of humanity, as some would have you believe.

They are the echoes of the Holy Spirit inviting you into a conversation. It is this invitation to a better way of living that acts as our “consciences” even before we can articulate a desire for faith.

Our imagination is not an autonomous entity set apart from our heart where Christ is to live and reign. It is just as much His dwelling place and should be treated with both wonder and gravity.

So as you seek Him in prayer and ask Him to renew your mind, be on the lookout for His still small voice.

He wants to do more than just give you directions, he wants to talk with you as a friend.
